How do I care for my granite countertop?
For everyday use, wipe your countertop with a damp cloth and dry well to avoid any streaking or water marks.
Use a microfiber cloth to dust off countertop surfaces. Once a week wipe down with a damp cloth and a stone cleaner formulated with a neutral pH. All natural stone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer to prevent staining. Do not use any cleaners containing ammonia or acids as these can break down the sealer or mar the surface of softer stones such as marbles and limestone.
Do not use scouring pads or abrasive cleaners as these may scratch surfaces as well. To check if you need to seal your granite, put a small amount of water on the countertop in a space that it will not be disturbed. Let it sit for 15 minutes. If the water is absorbed, you need to re-seal your granite countertops.
Does granite scratch easily? Can I cut directly on my granite top?
In order to scratch granite you would need to use something as hard as it is or harder.
While cutting on your granite top won’t scratch the surface, it will dull your knife. Because of this we recommend always using a cutting board. Scratches can be repaired without resurfacing the entire area. Our service technician can schedule an appointment to come out to your home and work at removing the scratch. This process, when complete, will make the blemish less noticeable or even undetectable.
What do I do if my countertop chips?
Most chips are repairable in a granite countertop. If you happen to get a chip, save the pieces and call us for a service call.
Our service technician will come out and repair the chipped area using the granite pieces you saved. Usually after the repair is complete, you can’t tell a chip ever happened.
I hear granite stains easily. Is this true?
The key is to make sure your granite countertops are always properly sealed.
Although the sealer will not make the countertops stain proof, it will greatly lessen the level of porosity because the sealer acts as a barrier, thus giving you more time to clean up a spill. By this easy maintenance, you should be able to avoid any potential problems. However, should a stain occur, no worries. They can be removed. Simply contact our service department for more information and assistance.
How often do I need to seal my granite top?
Our granite is installed in your home pre-sealed and should be resealed periodically according to color recommendations.
Granite comes pre-sealed and needs to be sealed at least once a year thereafter for lighter stones, darker ones less frequently because of their density. Before you can apply the sealer you need to clean your countertops with denatured alcohol. Use a clean, soft cloth to apply a generous coat of the sealer. Allow this to penetrate the stone as directed. Take another clean, dry cloth and wipe the excess sealer off. The sealer needs to be wiped off while wet, so if the sealer starts to dry, add more sealer to the countertop and continue to wipe it off. Use a final clean dry cloth and do a final wipe down to ensure all the excess sealer is removed.
